Sweet Christmas Wreath Shaped Taralli - Taralli Dolci di Natale

These sweet tarallis are a timeless delicacy. They are soft and tender, topped with a double glaze of flavoured anise icing. They are simple and easy to prepare and can be made all year round. These traditional delicious Italian sweet tarallis are a fun & festive treat to make for any occasion. Plus, you can make them days in advance because they keep well. This is very helpful, especially during the Holidays ! 🎄🥂🍾
INGREDIENTS: Makes approx: 30-32 tarallis
6 cups (770 g) sifted A/P flour (plus extra 1/2 cup if needed)
1 cup (200 ml) neutral oil (we used sunflower oil)
1 cup (228 ml) milk
2 cups (200 g) sugar
2 tbsp (16 g) baking powder
1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
3 large eggs 🥚 (room temp)
TOPPING:
Powdered sugar
A bit of milk 🥛
2-3 drops of anise extract
Coloured sprinkles to reflect the Holidays or occasion
DIRECTIONS: Oven temperature 350 F (180 C)
1) Prepare 2 lined parchment paper baking sheets.
2) In a large bowl, sift flour, salt & baking powder.
3) In another bowl, add the eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, oil & milk. Mix well.

4) Make a well in the centre of the flour mix. Gently pour the wet mixture in 3-4 increments while mixing with a fork. Finish off by hand. Combine until a very soft dough forms. Use reserved flour if needed.

5) Roll out the dough to form 2 logs. Cut off a piece of dough. Roll it out to about 10” (approx 25cm).
6) Fold the rope, then twist. Pinch the ends together to form a circle. Place on the baking sheets. Repeat with the remaining dough.

7) Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

8) In a medium size bowl, add powdered sugar. Start adding the milk, a bit at a time. Add 2-3 drops of anise extract. Mix well till you achieve the consistency you desire.
9) Dip the tarallis in the glaze. Place back on the wire rack till completely dry. Once completely dried, dip them a second time in the glaze before placing back on the wire rack and to top with the colourful sprinkles that reflects the Holiday or occasion, before the glaze sets. Since we are in the Christmas Holiday Season 🎄, we choose the Christmas coloured sprinkles, along with gold & silver pearl sprinkles to represent the New Year! 🥂🍾

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year!
Buon Natale a tutti e Felice Anno Nuovo ! 🎄🥂🍾
