Muffuletta Sandwich

The muffuletta sandwich is an iconic sandwich originated in New Orleans that has very strong roots from Sicilian immigrants. The majority of Italian immigrants in New Orleans are from Sicily. They started to arrive in large numbers in the late 19th century, bringing with them their delicious recipes.

Among their many recipes was a traditional Sicilian-style soft round flat loaf bread topped with sesame seeds, called the muffuletta bread. In our opinion, the muffuletta bread resembles a very large sesame seed hamburger bun.

The bread (large bun) is the foundation for this famous muffuletta sandwich, which was invented by a Sicilian immigrant, Salvatore Lupo, who immigrated in the French Quarter (which they nicknamed it Little Palermo) of New Orleans in 1906.

The olive salad style mixture used in this sandwich is made up of chopped pickled giardiniera (vegetable mix) black and green olives. Today you can find this delicious savoury mixture in most Italian grocery stores.

Although the authentic muffuletta bread is difficult to find outside of New Orleans, it can be substituted with pagnotta (Italian round bread), pane casareccio (Italian loaf bread), ciabatta and even with focaccia.

INGREDIENTS: Time: 15 minutes - preparation for the sandwich

OPTIONAL: plus one hour refrigerated under some weight, allowing the bread to soak

up the olive salad and compress the layers

One pagnotta

1 - 25 oz. jar (approx 750 g) muffuletta olive salad

1/4 lb (approx 115 g) mortadella (thinly sliced)

1/4 lb (approx 115 g) mild capocollo (thinly sliced)

1/4 lb (approx 115 g) hot capocollo (thinly sliced)

1/4 lb (approx 115 g) hot soppressata calabrese (thinly sliced)

1/4 lb (approx 115 g) Genoa salami (thinly sliced)

1/4 lb (approx 115 g) prosciutto cotto (thinly sliced)

2/3 lb (approx 300 g) provolone cheese (thinly sliced)

OR: your choices of Italian cold cuts/deli meats and cheeses

DIRECTIONS:

1. Horizontally slice your bread in half.

2. Spread some of the olive salad (muffuletta mixture)on both pieces of the bread.

3. Start by layering your cold cuts (one choice of meat at a time) and provolone cheese. Repeat the layers of meat and cheese. You may also add a little more of the olive salad in between the layers.

4. Close the sandwich with the top piece of bread. Press down to compress together.

5. OPTIONAL: for a better tasting sandwich, tightly wrap it in plastic wrap.

Place some weight over it (heavy object like a cast-iron or cans). Let rest in the refrigerator for a good hour before slicing into triangle pieces and serving!

This will allow the bread to soak up that delicious savoury olive salad and compress the cold cuts, making it easier to bite into.

This muffuletta sandwich is simple, easy and quick to put together and definitely a guaranteed hit at every family and friends game gathering! Another great idea is during the summertime picnics !
