It’s autumn! The leaves are turning color, and apples are in season. You went apple picking with your family and ended up with a mountain of apples. Now, you’re wondering how to use them all.

Well, we have a fantastic idea! Have you ever considered making your own delicious homemade cinnamon applesauce? It’s easier than you might think!

Why Make Your Own Applesauce?

Making homemade applesauce is not just a fun activity; it’s also a great way to use up those extra apples. Plus, you’ll end up with a healthy, naturally sweetened snack. But wait, there’s more! Applesauce isn’t just for snacking or dessert. It can accompany many meat dishes like sausage, chicken, or pork chops.

You can also add it to pancake or cake batter. Top your ice cream, ricotta, or cottage cheese with it. Spread it over a piece of bread for a delightful treat. The possibilities are endless!

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs. (approx. 1.5 kilos) of apples (we used Macintosh apples)

  • 1 cup (125ml) water

  • 1 tsp. (5ml) cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp. (2.5ml) salt

  • Juice of half a lemon

  • A few lemon strips (peels)

Directions: Cooking on the Stovetop

  1. Prep the Apples: Rinse, peel, and core the apples. Cut them into cubes. This will help speed up the cooking process.

  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large pot, add the cubed apples, lemon strips, lemon juice, and water.

  3. Cook the Apples: Bring to a boil over high heat with the lid on. Lower the temperature and let it cook for about 10-15 minutes or until the apples are completely cooked through. Stir periodically.

  4. Add Seasoning: Remove from the burner. Add salt and cinnamon, then stir. Let it cool for 10 minutes before blending to avoid burns.

  5. Purée the Apples: Purée the apples directly in the pot using a stick blender. Alternatively, you can use a standing blender. For a chunkier texture, use a potato masher.

OPTIONAL: Blend with or without lemon peels.

  6. Adjust Consistency: If you find the applesauce too thick, add a touch of water to thin it out.

  7. Store Your Applesauce: Fill your jars. Clean the rim with a paper towel before sealing with lids. Place them in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, freeze applesauce in small, portion-sized airtight containers or small freezer bags for up to 6 months.

There you go! We told you that making applesauce at home is easier than you think. You’ll love the taste and the memories you create while cooking with your family.
